Costa Rica Fishing

For an incredible week of Big Game fishing in an unforgettably gorgeous tropical island location, join Capt. Bob and and his angler friends on this Costa Rica trip June, 2010. The fishing for Sailfish and Tuna is incredible.

Costa Rica East Cost – flats fishing – There is a wadable flat just 20 feet from your bungalow with tailing Bonefish and Permit. On several days I caught Bonefish before breakfast! The Permit are plentiful and easier to catch than Florida Keys Permit. The Tarpon are also found rolling in nearby channels and creeks to complete your grand slam fishing at Turneffe. And to top it off, Turneffe Flats is giving us a great deal!!! 5 Full Days of Fishing, 7 Nights of very comfortable Lodging and great restaurant quality meals (3 per day) for $2800 per person (about 20% off the normal double occupancy rate).Click here to check out a video of Places in Costa Rica

Avid fishermen will agree there is no place quite like Costa Rica for sport fishing. Because of the proximity to the sea, there are endless opportunities to catch the big one here! There are the Pacific ports as well as the many rivers and canals along the Atlantic coast. There is also a fair amount of fresh water fishing available in the larger rivers found in the northern areas of the country. What all this means is that whatever type of fishing you’re in the mood for, it can be found in Costa Rica, and because it’s such a compact country, if your visit is long enough you can try it all while you’re there. To get you started, here is a brief rundown of Costa Rica’s main fishing regions.

Northern Pacific

In the northern coastal area Gulf of Papagayo, Flamingo Beach is the hotspot for sport fishing. There is a full service marina here as well as charter boats to other good fishing spots. Here you can sport fish for sailfish, marlin, tuna, dorado, wahoo, and roosterfish. These fish can be caught pretty much all year but the best fishing often runs from November to March.

Pacific

The abundance of billfish has made this the most popular area for sport fishing in all of Costa Rica. In addition to the above mentioned fish you can also catch mahi-mahi, and snapper in this area. There are plenty of ports providing access to the sea, and charter boats offer tours of various duration and price points so everyone can find a tour to suit their interest and budget.

Central Pacific

From December to April, billfish are caught in this region in phenomenal numbers. It is almost guaranteed that you won’t leave your Costa Rica vacation without some pretty big fish tales to tell. Inshore fishing and even fishing from the shore in this area will produce a good day’s catch of tuna, roosterfish, wahoo, dorado, small snapper, and snook. You never have to travel very far to make a catch!

Southern Pacific

This area offers the fewest number of charters out to sea and they are somewhat scattered along the shoreline. If you want to fish where things are a little less busy, this might be the spot for you. What is more prevalent in this region is some good light tackle fishing in the many little inlets and caves. Don’t discount this as challenging fishing, however, light tackle fishing here often means you’ll still be pulling in 30 and 40 pound fish.

The Pacific Sailfish

This is one of the most exciting game fish in the world. Once hooked, these fighters often break water dozens of times, for the thrill of a life time. Most Sail fishing is done by fast trolling large colorful lures and live bait. You can often see a sail fish approach the lure at light speed and then burst in to action! All sail fishing is strictly “catch and release”, which means there will be plenty left to catch next year!

Black Marlin

This is one of the ultimate game fish in the world. Some times exceeding 1000 lb., this is one of the “kings” in the sport fishing world. Heavy tackle is provided to handle these giants, including fighting chairs, and heavy rods and reels. If you hook one of these monsters, don’t expect to put down your pole for an hour (or two).

Blue Marlin

Like the Black Marlin, this is one of the ultimate game fish in the world. Some times exceeding 1000 lb., this is one of the “kings” in the sport fishing world. Heavy tackle is provided to handle these giants, including fighting chairs, and heavy rods and reels.

Rooster Fish

This game fish is a real thrill! They are caught by the dozens often in close to shore waters. They can be be easily caught on just about any kind of spin cast lure you can throw in the water, as well as on salt water fly’s. They generally run from about 10-15 lb., but can reach over 25 lb. or more. These fish are also real fighters. It’s not uncommon to have one of these fish on the line for 20 minutes or more.

Dorado or Mahi Mahi

…Also know as a Dolfin, and Mahi Mahi. This is an incredible fish. If you have never seen one, your in for a real surprise the first time one pops out of the water. These fish almost appear animated in a collage of fluorescent color, as they are taken on board the boat. They are also a real fighter, often breaking water, and generally putting up a real battle! These fish are commonly released, but are often taken back for the evenings dinner as well. The Dorado is regarded as one of the best tasting fish in the world, a highly prized delicacy. DORADO or MAHI MAHI Are caught regularly when we are trolling for sailfish & marlin.

Yellowfin Tuna

Without a doubt, the period from June thru October is the best time for hard battling yellowfin tuna. Huge schools of yellowfins come closer to the to shoreline at this time of year offering offshore anglers solid rod bending action. Some yellowfin are caught year-round but the best action is during the rainy season. The seas are still calm then and it rains mostly in the afternoons. Largest yellowfin tuna was a beauty of 315 pounds.
